New Headquarters Project

Securing the future of Scouting in High Green

We’ve been dreaming of a new Headquarters Building for over 20 years. Now our dreams have become reality, thanks to a grant from DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport), under the Youth Investment Fund.

We have been awarded over £1.8m, enabling us to demolish our old timber hut and replace it with a state of the art building. It is designed to be Net Zero Carbon in operation, allowing us not only to sustain as a Scout Group, but grow, increasing our membership and reach!

This page will be updated regularly with project information, project news, and progress on site.

Month-by-month Construction Updates

April 2024 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

During April, the externals to our site took shape, with completion of the retaining wall, installation of kerb lines, footpaths, and the perimeter fence. External services such as lighting and air conditioning units were also fitted.

Internally, plastering was completed, decorations and ceiling installation commenced, the kitchen was fitted, and mechanical and electrical final fix works continued.

March 2024 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

March saw the completion of high level works externally, including the roof, solar panels, and almost all of the cladding. This allowed the scaffolding to be removed, which meant the externals could be progressed. The ground workers returned to site, installing the surface water attenuation tank and completed drainage. Incoming services including power and water feeds were also installed. Power was connected in the street making power available inside the building. The old fence was removed in preparation for the retaining wall construction against the Leisure Centre Car Park. Finally, the remaining external windows and doors were fitted.

Internally, 1st fix mechanical and electrical installation was completed, which was a key milestone. This allowed walls to be closed up and plaster skim finishing to commence.

Works Planned for the Coming Period

During April the external of the building will start taking shape. With hard landscaping (kerb lines, paving and footpaths) being formed. The retaining wall against the Leisure Centre car park will be built, and install of the new fence will commence.

Internally, plaster skim finishing to walls will complete and decorations will commence. The kitchen will be installed, including the fire rated roller serving hatch shutter. Electrical and mechanical 2nd fix will continue to progress.

February 2024 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

During February, brickwork and cladding was completed. The roof progressed close to completion, with the rear solar panel roof elevation being completed ready for solar panels to be installed. The main roof elevation was 75% complete. The first floor meeting room window was installed before the scaffold removal. Internally, dry liners installed partition metalwork and single side boarded. 1st fix electrical and mechanical installations followed on, seeing an increase to the number of operatives on site and the pace of the project.

Works Planned for the Coming Period

The focus externally in March, will be to complete all high level works from the scaffolding, including the roof, and the solar panel installation. The scaffolding will then be removed, allowing external works to progress, such as the surface water attenuation tank, and other external services including the remaining drainage, and incoming power and water supplies.

Internally, 1st fix mechanical and electrical installations will complete, walls will be closed up and 2nd side boarded. Walls will be tape and jointed, which will start to release works for finishing trades, including joinery, decorations and floor finishes.

January 2024 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

Works re-commenced in the new year following the Christmas shutdown. The main works through January consisted of progressing the building’s envelope. This included continuing SFS (Structural Framing System), sheathing board, insulation, brickwork, and commencement of the roof. Internally, metal stud work commenced, seeing the start of the internal fit out!

Works Planned for the Coming Period

The focus in to February will be making the building weather tight by continuing the external envelope (roof, brickwork and walls). Windows and doors will be installed. Internally the floor screed will be installed which will see the internal fit out works ramp up, with 1st fix partitions, and mechanical and electrical installations.

December 2023 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

Despite December being a short month with works pausing for the Christmas and New Year period, the pace of construction continued. Within the month, the pre-cast concrete floor planks were installed by crane through the steel frame. The remaining elements of steelwork including cold rolled steel purlins were then installed completing the steel frame. External brick work was completed up to DPC (Damp Proof Course), which in turn allowed the cavity to be filled up to DPC level. The gas membrane installation commenced, followed by the installation of SFS (Steel Framing System). At the end of the month, scaffolding was erected around the building to provide access for brickwork, cladding, and roofing works.

At the end of 2023, we reflect on what has been an amazing 12 months for 105th Sheffield Scout Group. At the beginning of the year, our design team worked hard to design our building, which enabled us to price the project, conclude our grant application, and submit for planning. Whilst our team continued to work hard, we later received the fantastic news that we had been successful in our YIF funding bid, enabling this much needed project to go ahead. With works commencing on site late August. Since then, during the 4 months of work on site, a huge amount has been completed.

We would like to thank our building team, construction partner, design and project management team, our volunteers, young people and parents for the continued support over the last 12 months.

Works Planned for the Coming Period

Works will commence in the new year, and will see the external envelope of the building progress. This will include SFS and weather boarding and commencement of the roof, which will see the envelope being closed up towards a water tight structure. Brickwork will continue to external elevations, and cladding works will also commence.

November 2023 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

Following a very wet and windy start to November with two named storm events, the ground beam foundations were started early in the month. Following this the steel arrived on site, seeing the 1st visit by the steel erectors, who got the bulk of the frame up within 2 days.

Later in November, substructure brick and block work commenced, constructing pier walls, which will turn support pre-cast concrete planks that will make up the floor.

Works Planned for the coming period
In early December, the pre-cast concrete planks will be delivered and installed by crane. This will then allow the final elements of steelwork to be installed, completing the steel frame. Following this, external masonry, roofing and cladding works will commence in to the new year.

October 2023 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

Work in October saw completion of grouting works, to remediate poor ground conditions and address potential ground risks from former mine workings. A total of 22 CFA piles (Continuous Flight Auger) were then sunk down to bedrock, circa 7m deep, which in time will support the load of the building. Following this, a main foul drainage run which passes under the building was replaced. The buildings foundations, which are steel re-enforced concrete ground beams commenced at the end of the month.

Works Planned for the coming period

Foundations will be completed during early November. The Steel frame will then be delivered and erected early to mid November. The building will really start taking shape from this point forward!

Later in November, sub-structure brick/ block work will commence, ahead of the delivery and installation of pre-cast concrete floor planks at the end of November.

September 2023 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

Construction work started on site on 21st August 2023. The asbestos roof was removed from the hut, which was then demolished along with the garage during the first week. The following weeks consisted removal of demolition arisings, and formation of the pilling mat. Grouting works then commenced on site to remediate poor ground conditions and address potential ground risks from former mine workings.

Works Planned for the coming period

Following completion of grouting works, CFA (Continuous flight auger) piles will be sunk approximately 6m deep in to rock head, which will support the building. Foundations and ground beams will then be installed on top of the piles, in preparation for the steel frame arriving on site at the end of October.

August 2023 Update

Recent Works Undertaken

We have taken the opportunity to have a good sort through all of our equipment before packing it away into storage. We have disposed of, sold and donated all unwanted equipment, some of which has gone to support other Scout Groups in Sheffield. Our old tables and chairs have even been shipped to support a Children’s Education Charity in Africa. The equipment that is being kept has been packed up, removed from site, and taken to storage. This will be returned when the new building is completed.

Works Planned for the coming period

Construction work will commence in the coming weeks (mid August 2023). Initial works will involve the main contractor setting up the site, removal of asbestos and demolition of the existing building and garage. Grouting ground improvement works will follow on, treating poor ground conditions and former mine workings, followed by piling and foundations before the steel frame arrives on site at the end of October.
